Vol. 196 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Jet Aircraft for Aer Lingus.

16.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if Aer Lingus have any plans for acquiring jet aircraft to meet the competition from such aircraft in other lines.

I am aware that Aer Lingus have for some time been considering the acquisition of jet aircraft for operation on some of their services. A decision to purchase such aircraft would necessitate an increase in the capital of the Company and the enabling legislation would afford the Oireachtas an opportunity to consider the matter.

Does the Minister consider that, if he wished to purchase such aircraft, he would be able to do so at short notice? Is it not necessary to order them now with a view to acquiring them a year or so hence?

It would be quite impossible for me to make a declaration of policy when the policy has not yet been decided. The development policy of Aer Lingus is based on a five year plan, taking into account all the circumstances. This whole matter is under constant consideration and will, in fact, be reviewed in the latter part of this year.

Would the Minister not agree it is a matter requiring urgent and immediate consideration?

Is the Minister further aware that the services in Cork Airport are grossly inadequate because there are not enough planes?
