Vol. 196 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Newport (Tipperary) Auxiliary Postman.

25.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs why one applicant (name supplied) for the vacant position of auxiliary postman at Rearcross, Newport, County Tipperary, was not called for interview.

Candidates for subordinate employment such as that of auxiliary postman are nominated by the local employment exchanges. As I mentioned in reply to a question by the Deputy on 20th June, six candidates were nominated by the employment exchanges and all six were interviewed. The person referred to by the Deputy was not nominated and accordingly he was not interviewed.

This man applied for employment in the postal service. Why was he not called?

He was not nominated by the employment exchange. When the Department of Posts and Telegraphs approached the employment exchange, his name was not sent forward.

Is it the employment exchange that nominates the candidates?

The cumann.

This man was well recommended by other Deputies.

The manager of the labour exchange had been appointed by the Minister's friends some time before that.
