Vol. 196 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Social Welfare Means Assessment.

55.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare why a means assessment of 15s. a week has been made in the case of a person (name supplied); and who made this calculation.

The means assessment referred to was made under the Unemployment Assistance Acts by a deciding officer who in exercise of his statutory duties determined the means of the person in question as 15s. a week. This decision was based on the yearly value of the benefit or privilege enjoyed by the person from maintenance in his brother's household. In accordance with the relevant statutory provisions governing the calculation of means for the purposes of those Acts such yearly value must be included in the assessment.

The decision of the deciding officer was confirmed on 3rd May, 1962, by an appeals officer whose decision is final.
