Vol. 196 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Sligo Farm Buildings Inspector.

13.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the reason for the delay in appointing a farm buildings inspector in the Riverstown area of County Sligo; and if he is aware of the fact that several farmers in this area have suffered much inconvenience by reason of the fact that long delays are occurring in the inspection of works already carried out and also in the approval of projected works.

It was necessary to arrange for the holding of an open competition by the Civil Service Commissioners to fill this and other vacancies for Agricultural Officers, Grade 7, in the congested districts. I understand that the competition has been held recently and I expect that it will soon be possible to make appointments to the vacant districts, including Riverstown.

Since the Riverstown post fell vacant, the work there has as far as possible been attended to by officers from neighbouring districts and, while delays were, in the circumstances, unavoidable, my Department received no complaints from farmers in the area of very serious inconvenience suffered by them.
