Vol. 196 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Car Safety Belts.

23.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that under the Road Traffic Act in England safety belts are now a compulsory item of equipment in all new motor cars; and if it is proposed to have similar regulations in Ireland.

24.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether his attention has been drawn to reports that the fitting of safety belts in cars is to be made compulsory in Britain; and whether any similar step is to be taken in this country.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 23 and 24 together.

I have seen press reports of the British announcement. The compulsory fitting of safety belts is one of the matters for consideration in the comprehensive review of the regulations regarding the construction, equipment and use of vehicles which is being undertaken in consultation with the various interests involved. As it is my practice to invite the views of interested persons before making any particular new regulation, I cannot at this stage indicate what the final decision will be.
