Vol. 196 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Evidence of Unemployment.

32.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will in future extend to unemployed persons living within four miles of a local employment office in rural areas the same facilities regarding verification of evidence of unemployment as are offered to those living six miles or more from such an office.

On 16th May last I replied to a somewhat similar question from the Deputy in relation to Unemployment Assistance and in the course of my reply I described the signing requirements laid down by my Department for unemployed persons. I consider that these requirements provide a necessary safeguard for the prevention of abuse of the unemployment assistance and unemployment benefit schemes and I am satisfied that they are reasonable. I do not, therefore, propose to alter them.
