Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ford Anglia Insurance Premiums.

15.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the discriminatory action by insurance companies in relation to the premiums charged for the insurance of Ford Anglia cars; and if in view of the large measure of employment given by the producers of this car he will endeavour to ensure that this eight horse power car is charged the same

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given to a question on this subject in Dáil Éireann on 23rd November last to which there is nothing I can usefully add.

Is the Minister aware that for insurance purposes, the companies rate the car at 16 horse power and yet it is taxable as eight horse power in this country?

I am aware of that. The rating of cars for taxation purposes was changed in 1953 but the insurance companies did not change to higher premiums in accordance with the change in rating because they decided that in some cases they would have to increase premiums and in others would have to reduce them.

Is there nothing the Minister can do about it?

There is nothing.

It is an injustice.

Is the Minister aware that as far as the Department of Finance is concerned, the rates are the low ones but where the insurance companies are concerned, the rates are the high ones? If you use such a car between your constituency and Dáil Éireann, you are remunerated at the low rate but you pay insurance at the high rate.

Is the Minister aware that as a result of intervention by the Ford Motor Company, certain companies rate it as eight horse power?

All insurance companies do not insure it as a 17.

There is only one company that will accept it as an eight, subject to certain conditions.

I am afraid I cannot advertise in the House.
