asked the Minister for Health the number of (a) local authority hospitals and (b) mental hospitals which have geriatric units or other means for specialised care and treatment of the aged, together with the number of aged patients at present under specialised care or receiving specialised treatment in each of these hospitals.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hospital Geriatric Units.
The specialised care of the aged involves a wide variety of care and treatment ranging from nursing and simple medical care to surgical and medical treatment of acute conditions. All county homes and all mental hospital can be regarded as providing specialised care for the aged and, in addition, several other hospitals also provide specialised care. In practically every county there is a link between the county hospital, the county home and the mental hospital so that the services of the medical and surgical specialists and physiotherapist of the county hospital are made available to the county home and the mental hospital. Medical officers of certain county homes have, in recent times, taken courses in geriatrics. In the regional centres of Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Waterford and Galway geriatric care of a higher level is made available.
The number of patients aged 65 and over in county homes and mental hospitals and in the institutions at the regional centres is shown in a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report. It will be seen from the table that on the dates for which the information is available there were 7,430 patients over 65 in the county homes and regional institutions and 4,845 in mental hospitals. Information is not available of the number of aged patients treated in other institutions.
