Vol. 196 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Superannuation Scheme for Bord na Móna Workers.

41.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power what is the present position regarding the establishment of a superannuation scheme for workers employed by Bord na Móna; and when it is likely that the scheme will be in operation.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that they have now completed their examination of the proposed superannuation scheme in the light of the representations made by the workers' representatives, and that they expect, within the next week, to submit the scheme for my formal approval, which requires also the concurrence of the Minister for Finance. Until I have had an opportunity to examine the proposals it is not possible to say when the scheme may come into operation but I can assure the Deputy that there will be no avoidable delay.

As this matter has been dragging on for a very considerable time could the Minister say when the scheme will come into operation? Will it become operative at the end of this year?

I should say so.

Do I understand the Minister to say that a new scheme will come into operation without any reference back to the workers?

The workers have already made their observations on the scheme.

They have already said that it is a "crummy" scheme, that they will have nothing to do with it and that they want to have a new one submitted to them.
