Vol. 197 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Effects of Oral Polio Vaccine.

32.

asked the Minister for Health whether the investigation being carried out by his Department into possible adverse effects of Sabin oral vaccine has yet been completed; and, if so, what are the results of this investigation.

Technical investigation into possible adverse effects of Sabin oral polio vaccine is not being carried out by my Department as the vaccine has been little used in this country to date, but I am maintaining close touch with investigations which are being carried out elsewhere. These investigations arose out of the fact that in a very small number of cases in USA and Canada, on average one case in about a million doses, poliomyelitis occurred some little time after oral vaccine was administered and it was desirable to attempt to find out whether the poliomyelitis resulted from the giving of the vaccine and, if so, why.
