Vol. 197 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Representation at London Food Fair.

76.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Agriculture why Ireland was not represented at the International Food Fair in Olympia, London.

The Advisory Committee on the Marketing of Agricultural Produce expressed the opinion that participation in fairs and exhibitions was only of limited value as a means of promoting Irish agricultural exports, and that their impact is considerably less than television and press advertising. In the case of commodities for which there are marketing boards, it is a matter for the boards to decide in what fairs or exhibitions they may wish to participate. As the Deputies will be aware, extensive publicity on behalf of our cattle trade was recently undertaken by my Department. No approach was made to my Department by food exporters regarding participation in the Olympia Food Fair.
