Vol. 197 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Untrained National Teachers.

137.

asked the Minister for Education the reasons why untrained national teachers recruited before 1921 are paid a higher salary than untrained national teachers recruited after this date; and if he will take steps to end this anomaly.

I do not agree that there is any anomaly in relation to this matter. The former group of teachers merely enjoy certain advantages as a result of their having been recruited before 1921. The fact that that is so is no reason for extending these advantages to other teachers. Furthermore my policy in regard to untrained teachers is to do everything possible to hasten the day when such teachers as a class will cease to exist.
