Vol. 197 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Síochána Rates and Conditions.

162.

asked the Minister for Justice if any steps are at present being taken to improve the pay rates and working conditions of members of the Garda Síochána.

The pay rates and working conditions of members of the Garda Síochána are dealt with under the scheme of conciliation and arbitration which, at the request of the Garda representatives, was introduced in 1959. The operation of the scheme has to date brought improvements the cost of which is in excess of £1,000,000 a year. In January last a composite claim for a pay increase for all ranks up to chief superintendent was lodged by the Joint Representative Body. Following the election of the new Representative Bodies in July, the new Joint Body indicated that they did not wish to pursue the claim lodged in January. The Representative Body for chief superintendents and superintendents lodged a new pay claim for their members on 25th September and this is being dealt with in accordance with the provisions of the scheme. I understand that a pay claim on behalf of members of the rank of Garda is at present being prepared by the Representative Body for Gardaí.
