Vol. 197 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Slaughter of In-Calf Reactor Cattle.

13.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if in view of the fact that a considerable number of the reactor cows at present being slaughtered would be due to calve within a few months he will consider the possibility of making suitable arrangements to postpone the slaughter of in-calf cows until the calves are born and thereby prevent a serious reduction in livestock numbers in the coming year.

This matter has not, so far, presented any serious difficulties, although large numbers of cows have had to be slaughtered as part of the measures which have resulted in the attestation of a large area of the country. A reasonable and commonsense attitude is adopted in the compulsory purchase of in-calf cows and I do not anticipate that serious difficulties will arise in the future.
