Vol. 197 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imports of Meat Products into Britain.

14.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Taoiseach the total value of imports into Britain of meat products, including bacon, pork, hams, canned hams and sausages in 1961; and what percentage of that total was supplied from Ireland and Denmark respectively.

According to the December 1961 issue of the Accounts relating to Trade and Navigation of the United Kingdom, the total imports of meat and meat preparations into that country in 1961 were valued at £311.5 million, of which 26.5 per cent. was supplied by Denmark and 7.1 per cent. by this country. These figures do not include the imports of live animals chiefly for food, valued at £44,000,000 in 1961, of which £43.9 million was supplied by this country.

You were not asked for that.

You were not asked for that at all.

You are not able to supply more than 7 per cent. of the British market and you are trying to get into the European market.
