Vol. 197 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Acquisition of County Kildare Estate.

51.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will impress on the Land Commission the necessity for acquiring for division amongst the local smallholders and other deserving applicants the estate of P.J. Walls, formerly Bord na Móna property (Shute & Ward) at Derrylea, Record No. U. 19228, County Kildare in view of the fact that these lands have been set by conacre for some years past; and if he will cause an immediate inspection to be made with a view to acquisition in view of the special circumstances of many smallholders in the area.

The determination of the lands to be acquired is an excepted matter reserved to the Land Commissioners and I shall have the Deputy's interest in this particular estate brought to their notice.

I understand however that the possibility of repurchasing these lands —which were originally allotted by the Land Commission to Bord na Móna in the years 1948-50 — was examined by the Land Commission on a number of occasions in recent years but such a course did not prove warranted.
