Vol. 197 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Consumption of Fish.

63.

asked the Minister for Lands if, in view of the fact that the only way to popularise fish is to ensure that (a) it is of good quality, (b) plentiful and regular supplies are available, (c) a reasonable variety is available, and (d) a fair price is charged to the consumer, he will state what practical steps he has taken in this regard.

The objectives mentioned by the Deputy are among those of the Programme of Sea Fisheries Development published in April last. Practical steps already taken to achieve these objectives include attraction of recruits to the catching side of the industry, easement of repayments and a free inspection service for boats on hire purchase, grants at the rate of 25 per cent. of the cost of new boats and new engines, construction of new types of boats, preparatory work for major fishery harbours, reduction of the price of ice, assessment of distribution problems and the organisation of suitable publicity and market development.
