Vol. 197 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Gola Island (Donegal) Radio Telephone.

84.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if, in the interests of the lives of fishermen, he will ensure that the wireless telephone to Gola Island, County Donegal, is in working order during the winter herring fishing, and not working intermittently as at present.

I have examined the record of faults on the Gola Island-mainland radio telephone link and I find that the service has, on the whole, been satisfactory.

I take it that the Deputy's question arises from recent interruptions which were due to a fault on the island equipment. Occasional faults are unavoidable. If they could be attended to promptly there would be no complaint. The difficulty is to get a skilled technician to the island quickly, particularly in bad weather conditions.
