Vol. 198 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Cottages.

92.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that the erection of cottages in County Kerry has been at a standstill for some months past on account of a direction from his Department to change over to service-type cottages; and whether, in view of the hardship suffered by several applicants for housing who had expected to be provided with cottages several months ago, and who are still waiting for work to commence, he will have this matter examined with a view to getting work on the provision of cottages under way again immediately.

I am not so aware. A circular letter issued from my Department in September, 1961, advocating the erection where practicable of serviced rural cottages, in keeping with overall policy on the provision of services. The circular did not contain any direction of a nature which would necessitate serious delay in the provision of cottages. The preparation of general house plans has been engaging the attention of the Kerry County Council for a considerable time. The final plans, received in my Department on the 14th November, 1962, were approved within three days. Estimates of cost of erection of the different house types and of individual cottages have been received this morning and are being approved.
