Vol. 198 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Consuls in Africa.

36.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether, having regard to the large number of Irish citizens in East and Central Africa, it is proposed to appoint consular representatives in that region; and, if so, when.

I am not at present contemplating the appointment of career consular representatives in central or eastern African states. In recent years, however, we have appointed a number of honorary consuls in countries in which a career consul would not be justified, and I should be glad to consider favourably the appointment of honorary consuls in suitable cases in the areas mentioned in the Deputy's question.
