Vol. 198 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drumkeerin (Leitrim) Dispensary Doctor.

1.

asked the Minister for Health what steps have been taken to accommodate a dispensary doctor in Drumkeerin, County Leitrim, as many local residents have to travel a distance of sixteen or eighteen miles to Drumshanbo to see their dispensary doctor.

I presume that the Deputy has in mind the provision of a dispensary residence for the district medical officer in Drumkeerin dispensary district. This would be a matter for the health authority in the first instance and I understand that the authority are not prepared to provide a dispensary residence in Drumkeerin dispensary district, particularly at present, as the reorganisation of dispensary districts in the area is under consideration.

Eligible persons resident in Drumkeerin dispensary district should not have to travel to Drumshanbo to attend their district medical officer. Dispensary sessions are held twice weekly at Drumkeerin and the district medical officer is obliged to attend eligible persons at their homes where they are unable to attend the dispensary or require his services urgently. I understand that the health authority have received no complaints regarding the service being provided by the district medical officer.
