Dáil Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 5 Dec 1962

Vol. 198 No. 5

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take business in the following order: Nos. 1, 4, 14, 15 and 16—Votes, 45 and 23. It is proposed to take Motions Nos. 45, 51 and 52 with Vote 45. Private Members' Business will be taken from 6 p.m. to 7.30 p.m.

The Labour Party asked—I admit only recently—that they be facilitated to ensure they would be in the House at the conclusion of the debate on Transport and Power. I informed the Parliamentary Secretary to the Taoiseach the reason why the Labour Party would be absent to-night. We are going to make a presentation to a colleague of ours who has been 40 years in Dáil Éireann. We asked that the Vote for the Department of Justice be taken at 7.30 p.m., on the assumption that the debate on Transport and Power would not have concluded by 6 o'clock. Would it be possible to facilitate us in that respect?

It is not quite reasonable to raise this at 3 o'clock.

I agree, but perhaps I should tell the Taoiseach it was an odds-on bet that the Minister would be in last night at or about 10.30 p.m., but that did not happen. It was also a reasonable bet that the Minister for Transport and Power would have concluded by 6 o'clock to-night, but I gather there are other speakers and he will not possibly conclude by 6 o'clock.

Many such horses have been beaten.

Could we get an agreement to let the Minister in at 4.30 p.m.?

We will, if he answers the questions.

That is the idea.

It is not his form to answer questions.

We should be obliged if it were possible for the House to facilitate us in this matter.

We are quite prepared to let it go until Tuesday. Let the Minister for Transport and Power conclude on Tuesday.

To-morrow surely?

Not at this stage.

Tuesday is all right for me.

I think we all want to meet colleagues who are in the situation in which the Labour Party are. They are going to pay tribute to an old and revered member of this House in which all of us would be happy to share but it is not convenient for us to take back the Estimate on Thursday morning. With the Government's agreement, we have no objection to carrying on with the programme of business and leaving the Estimate for Transport and Power to be disposed of on Tuesday.

We will put on the Estimate for the Department of Justice after Private Member's Time.

Is No. 44 being taken?

The Estimate for the Department of Justice will be taken after 7.30 p.m.

In view of that amicable arrangement, could we know what is to happen to-morrow?

That requires a little revision now but I will have the Deputy informed.

I should like to ask the Tánaiste when we are likely to see the terms of the Superannuation and Pensions Bill, 1962.

The Tánaiste?

You are always on my mind and in my heart.

It will go back to January.
