NOTE 1.—The grants at (a) and (h) represent 50% recoupment of approved provisions by the local authorities concerned for main road upkeep. In previous years recoupment was 40%. The figures marked with an asterisk are provisional.
NOTE 2.—The grants at (b) and (c) are allocated on a mileage basis. In a number of cases transfers as between the two classes of grants were effected in accordance with general conditions laid down by the Department, during the course of the year.
NOTE 3.—The grants at (d) are confined to counties in the Gaeltacht and congested areas.
NOTE 4.—The grants at (e) are made available for selected works on main roads, such as the replacement of dangerous bridges, which cannot be dealt with under the main road improvement grant (b). In addition to the allocations listed there are provisional commitments in respect of certain bridges where increases in cost, etc., are likely to arise.
NOTE 5.—The grants at (f) arose following the passing of the Road Fund (Grants and Advances) (Temporary Provisions) Act, 1959, and the Road Fund (Grants) (Temporary Provisions) Act, 1962, and are given to certain road authorities to enable them to deal with road problems created by railway closings and the establishment of certain major industrial undertakings.
NOTE 6.—The grants at (g) which were introduced this year are for necessary improvement works on selected sections of arterial routes, which are the major through-traffic routes.
NOTE 7.—The grants at (i) totalling £550,000 are determined having regard to the relative needs of each area.
NOTE 8.—The urban road improvement grant (j) was introduced for the first time in 1960/61. The distribution is related to the mileage of urban roads in each town. The total allocation (£55,155) is 10% in excess of the amount allocated in previous years.
NOTE 9.—The Estate Duties Grant was terminated from 1st April, 1962. The amounts at (k) are equal to the Estate Duties grant payments to the authorities concerned in 1961/62.
44.
asked the Minister for Local Government the total mileage of public roads in each local authority area in the country; and the total grants of all kinds, e.g. tourist grants, special grants, etc., paid to each local authority for public roads in each of the last four years.
The statement requested is being compiled. I would suggest that the Deputy repeat his Question in about a fortnight.
