Vol. 198 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Traffic Lines on Tarred Roads.

22.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider requesting public bodies to have white centres provided on tarred roads, where the roads are sufficiently wide to allow it.

A continuous white line along the centre of the roadway is prescribed for the regulation of traffic and there is a strict legal obligation not to cross it. The line is intended for use only where the sight distance is restricted or where for any other reason, it would be dangerous for traffic to cross it.

A broken centre line may also be used, and is recommended as a lead-in to continuous lines or for roads carrying heavy traffic. On account of the extra cost involved, I would not be disposed to recommend its general use on roads carrying light traffic.
