Vol. 198 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Forestry Land.

33.

asked the Minister for Lands if any land has been acquired for forestry in the Belderrig and Aughoos areas of County Mayo; and, if so, if work will start on it in the near future.

The Forestry Division of my Department has not yet acquired any land in the Belderrig area but negotiations are at present in progress for the purchase of an area of 572 acres in the townland of Cregganbeg, to the south-west of Belderrig. A number of other areas offered to my Department for afforestation in the Belderrig area are being investigated.

The only land held by the Forestry Division in the Aughoos area is the large experimental area at Glenamoy. No other areas are being considered for acquisition in the Aughoos district. Much of the land in this district is subject to severe exposure and future action must depend on the results from the long-term experiments at Glenamoy.
