Vol. 198 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of County Monaghan Rivers.

6.

asked the Minister for Finance when it is proposed to undertake the drainage of the Fane River in County Monaghan.

The Fane River is No. 20 on the accepted priority list of minor catchment areas to be dealt with under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, and it will be some years before it can be reached in the programme.

I understand there are representatives of the National Farmers Association in this area who would be anxious to have a deputation received by the Board of Works in January. Would the Parliamentary Secretary arrange that?

asked the Minister for Finance when it is proposed to undertake the drainage of the Dromore River in County Monaghan.

The Dromore River is part of the River Erne catchment area and its improvement is being considered in connection with an arterial drainage scheme for that catchment. An engineering survey has been completed and study of the data collected and work on the design of a scheme are proceeding. This is a large and important catchment covering more than 500 square miles in counties Cavan, Leitrim, Longford and Monaghan and although we are pressing on with the preparations as fast as we can, it will be a few years yet before we can begin the actual works. I cannot commit myself to a specific date for commencement of works, but under pressure, I have already mentioned 1965 tentatively and I will do my best to give effect to that.
