Vol. 199 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Holidays of Insurance Agents

25.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what action will be taken against employers who fail to allow full-time insurance agents paid solely by way of commission, their annual statutory holidays.

I said in reply to a Question on 31st October, 1962, that I regard these agents as being within the scope of the Act but that representations had been made to me concerning difficulties which the agents' employers see in complying with the provisions of the Act as it stands.

Since then, representatives of the insurance companies concerned have had a discussion with the officers of my Department. I am hopeful that a settlement acceptable to all concerned, can be reached on the practical application of the provisions of the Act to the insurance agents and I feel that it would be contrary to the best interests of both employees and employers if any action were taken which could prejudice the possibility of such a settlement being reached.
