Vol. 199 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Citizens in receipt of British Pensions.

36.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is aware that Irish citizens residing in this country who are in receipt of pensions from the British Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance do not qualify for increases in their pension when increases are granted in Britain; and if he will make representations in this matter to the appropriate authorities in Britain.

I am aware that a person receiving a British retirement pension or widow's pension who comes to live in this country, or a person living here who qualifies for such pension, does not receive any subsequent increase in the rate of pension while continuing to reside here. Representations on this matter have been made in the past without success. This restriction on payment of increases of British pensions is not limited to persons who return to this country but applies generally.

The question of making reciprocal arrangements with Great Britain in regard to pensions has been under examination but certain difficulties have been encountered. It is impossible to say at this stage whether these difficulties can be overcome.
