Vol. 199 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Conservation of Shellfish Stocks.

42.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will outline the present measures which are taken with a view to the conservation of shellfish stocks; and whether he will investigate the necessity for taking further steps to conserve stocks of this important and potentially profitable class of fish.

Conservation of shellfish is achieved by the making and enforcement of statutory orders and bye-laws prescribing minimum size limits, close seasons and other restrictions. These measures are constantly under review. I might mention, for instance, that I propose to increase the minimum size limit for lobsters.
