Vol. 199 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closing of Industries.

17.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce how many industries established with the aid of grants made (a) under the Undeveloped Areas Acts, 1952 to 1957, and (b) under the Industrial Grants Acts, 1956 to 1959 have closed down since establishment, and the amount of moneys provided directly or indirectly by the Oireachtas and paid by way of (1) grant and (2) loan in any such industry.

Seven industries established with the aid of grants under the Undeveloped Areas Acts, 1952 to 1957, have closed down. Four of the seven industries have been replaced by other firms which have acquired the factory premises and started new industries. A similar development is expected shortly in relation to another of the original industries.

The amount of State grant provided was £254,896. The amount of loans provided directly or indirectly from moneys provided by the Oireachtas was £150,000, of which £71,246 has been repaid up to the present.

The Sligo Spinning Company Limited whose premises were burned down in 1962 are not included in these figures.

Two industries established with the aid of grants under the Industrial Grants Acts, 1956 to 1959, have closed down. The amount of State moneys provided by way of grant was £11,000. Loans amounted to £4,500, all of which have been repaid.
