Vol. 199 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - UN Report on Jadotville Fighting.

60.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he has received from the United Nations a full report on the fighting at Jadotville in 1961; and, if so, whether he has satisfied himself that the officer commanding the Irish troops on that occasion, and the officers and other ranks serving under him, are deserving of high commendation for their conduct.

The United Nations Organisation does not furnish reports to me in connection with the Irish units in the Congo. These units are part of the United Nations Forces in the Congo and while serving in that country are under the command and control of the United Nations organisation.

I stated in the House on 22 Bealtaine 1962 (Volume 195, No. 9, Column 1290) that everything I had heard about the commanding officer and the unit which was engaged at Jadotville was quite praiseworthy. I am satisfied that the unit discharged its duty in keeping with the high standards maintained by all our units in the Congo.
