Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice the number and rank of members of the Garda Síochána engaged in training other members in the use of speed-detecting equipment, the number of Gardaí trained to date in the use of such equipment, and the cost of the training programme.

Three Sergeants and three Gardaí are at present engaged in training other members of the Force in the use of speed-detecting equipment. The number of Gardaí trained to date in the use of such equipment is 164 and the cost of the training programme is estimated at £2,000.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice the number of speed-detecting units which will be used by the Garda Síochána, and the divisions to which they will be assigned.

Ten electromatic radar speed meters will be used by the Garda Síochána, one being used for training purposes in the Depot Driving School and the others will be based, one each in the Dublin Metropolitan Divisions, Cork, Limerick, Waterford, Bray, Naas, Mullingar, Galway and Sligo.

asked the Minister for Justice the cost of radar, or other speed-detecting equipment, purchased to date or to be purchased within the next year for the Garda Síochána.

The cost of speed-detecting equipment purchased to date is £4,270. At this stage it is not possible to say whether the purchase of further speed-testing equipment within the next year will be necessary.
