Vol. 199 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Castletownbere Harbour Development.

33.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state with reference to recent reports what the position is regarding the development project for Castletownbere harbour, County Cork.

The position as to the development of a major fishery harbour at Castletownbere was outlined to the House on 6th December last (columns 898 and 899) when it was stated that the Commissioners of Public Works expected that the final design of the scheme would be decided about the middle of this year and arrangements to start the works would then be made. I should like to make it clear that there is no foundation whatever for any report that doubts about the wisdom of expenditure on these works have Departmental support. In fact, Castletownbere was selected as one of the five major fishery harbours after a very full examination by my Department. The decision to develop this harbour is based on the conclusion that it is the most suitable for major development in the south-western area.

The reports are false?

The Southern Star is usually false.
