Vol. 199 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Exchequer Income from Cigarette Tobacco.

24.

asked the Minister for Finance what was the total income to the Exchequer from revenue or other taxes on cigarette tobacco during each of the years 1958 to 1962 inclusive.

As the answer includes a tabular statement, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

Following is the answer:

Exact figures of receipts of duty are available in respect of imported cigarettes but the receipts from home-made cigarettes must be given on an estimated basis. The bulk of the tobacco revenue is derived from the duty on the imported leaf and it is not possible to apportion this revenue accurately as between leaf for cigarette-making and leaf for use in the manufacture of other tobacco products. The estimated figures given in the following table are based on the proportion of total home production of tobacco products represented by the output of home-made cigarettes.
