Vol. 199 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Testing for Fall-Out.

11.

asked the Minister for Health the present arrangements for the testing for fall-out by local authorities and his Department from the aspect of health safety.

Routine testing of air, rainwater and tap water, designed to indicate increases in the levels of total radioactivity, is carried out continuously by the Meteorological Service of the Department of Transport and Power. In addition, the testing of milk samples for Strontium-90 and Iodine-131 is carried out on behalf of my Department by the Meteorological Service and by the British Agricultural Research Council.

Health authorities do not possess the complex facilities required for the radio-chemical analysis of the constituents of fall-out, and its interpretation, and have not, therefore, carried out tests.
