Vol. 200 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Juvenile Labour Force.

22.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he has available any method apart from the numbers on the live register, for assessing the numbers of young persons between the ages of fourteen and sixteen who are not attending full-time educational courses, and who are available for employment; and, if not, whether, in view of the fact that considerable numbers of these juveniles do not appear on the live register, he will arrange for regular assessments of their numbers to be made with a view to ascertaining the exact size of the potential juvenile labour force.

It is open to any boy or girl who has left school to register for employment at a local employment exchange or branch employment office. All those who do so are included in the live register. I do not think that the introduction of any other method of registration would be warranted.

Is the Minister aware that some employment branch managers tell people who want to register that because of the fact that they have not an insurance card, they are not entitled to do so?

I am not so aware.

If I bring it to your notice, will you rectify it?
