Vol. 200 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Replacement of Corvettes.

34.

asked the Minister for Defence if he has any plans for replacing the corvettes in the Irish Naval Service with more up-to-date craft to ensure that Irish territorial waters may be properly patrolled so that Irish fishing grounds that have become so competitive in recent years may be fully protected.

As I informed the Deputy in reply to a Question on this subject on 27th June, 1962, our corvettes are likely to give satisfactory service for a number of years yet and their replacement is not at present contemplated.

(South Tipperary): Would the Minister consider adapting the new helicopters to that service when we get them?

That is a separate matter.

The corvettes will be worn out by then.

They are worn out as it is.
