andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Education the total number of national schools needing to be replaced, the estimated cost of replacement at present rates, and the present annual rate of their replacement.

The information requested is as follows:—

At the end of December, 1962, the total number of national schools recommended for replacement was 717. The cost of replacement is estimated at £12,000,000. The average annual number of new schools erected in the four year period ended 31st December, 1962, was 82.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Education the total number of national schools requiring major structural repairs; the present current rate at which such work is completed, and the estimated total cost of such work which requires to be done.

The information requested is as follows:—

At the end of December, 1962, the number of national schools reported upon by the Commissioners of Public Works as needing major improvements was 236. The cost of renovating these schools is estimated at £500,000. The present current rate at which schemes of major improvements are completed is about 60 each year.
