Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clew Bay Oyster Beds.

61.

asked the Minister for Lands if his attention has been drawn to a statement that the oyster growing in Clew Bay will be under scientific observation with a view to developing oyster beds being farmed as a business; and whether he can state the present condition of the oyster beds referred to.

My Department is arranging to carry out a scientific investigation in regard to oysters in a selected area of Clew Bay where seed oysters were experimentally planted some years ago. The results, which are expected to be available before the end of this year, should provide information of value in the development of oyster farming in this and other areas.

Is this the oyster plantation laid by the Department of Fisheries about which I asked the Parliamentary Secretary on a previous occasion and about which he said he knew nothing whatever?

I did not say that. This is——

The Parliamentary Secretary is telling me. I planted them and he lost them. I am glad he has now discovered them.

It has been a hopeless fiasco. You put down the wrong species.

That is a fact.

The remaining questions for oral answer will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
