Vol. 200 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Radio Éireann Journalists.

19.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will take steps to prevent a disruption of radio and television news services by arranging a settlement of the dispute between the Radio Éireann Authority and journalists employed by it.

20.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if, in view of the refusal of the Radio Éireann Authority to negotiate an agreement with the National Union of Journalists, he will take steps, including the introduction of such legislation as may be necessary, to require the Authority to negotiate conditions of employment with recognised trade unions.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions 19 and 20 together.

I have no function in the fixing of the remuneration and conditions of Radio Éireann staff. The trade unions representing the staff are of course free to refer disputes to the Labour Court and I cannot, therefore, agree that amending legislation is necessary.
