Vol. 200 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Payment of Telephone Account.

26.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the date upon which a payment of a telephone account (number supplied) which had been paid by the subscriber concerned at a Dublin district post office on 30th November last was received in the telephone accounts section of his Department, the reason for the delay, the steps normally taken by district offices to notify the telephone accounts section of payment, and the steps which will be taken in future to avoid delays.

27.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs what amends will be made by his Department to the telephone subscriber (number supplied) whose service was wrongly disconnected on 12th December last.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to answer questions Nos. 26 and 27 together.

As the telephone account was not paid during the normal period, written warning of disconnection within 7 days was sent to the subscriber on the 24th November, 1962. Payment was made at a sub-post-office on the 30th November. In accordance with normal procedure the payment was included in the local cash account and a written notification to the telephone accounts section prepared. Due to some mishandling either in the course of post, or at the local office, the notification did not reach the telephone accounts section and outward telephone service was withdrawn on the 12th December. Full service was restored on the 14th December on learning from the subscriber that payment had been made. An apology has been made to the subscriber and a rebate of rental has been allowed for the period during which inward service only was available. An accident such as occurred in this case is rare and no practicable alternative is seen to existing arrangements for notifying payments to headquarters,
