Vol. 200 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Raids on Dublin Sub-Post Offices.

34.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of (1) successful and (2) unsuccessful raids on sub-post offices in Dublin City during the past twelve months; what was the total amount stolen in cash or other negotiable currency; how much was recovered; how many prosecutions were instituted as a result; how many convictions were obtained; and whether any of the personnel were injured as a result, and, if so, to what extent.

I assume that the Deputy refers to raids during business hours. One such case occurred in the past twelve months. The total property taken was £201 in cash none of which has so far been recovered. Two persons have been charged with the offence and are in custody awaiting trial. Nobody suffered personal injury.

35.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if in view of raids on sub-post offices in recent weeks he will have sympathetic consideration given to a more adequate system of protection for those offices which are, in the main, serviced by female staffs.

The security arrangements at sub-post offices are kept under review by my Department and I can assure the Deputy that the position at offices staffed mainly by females is receiving special attention.
