Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC: British Reservations.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if his attention has been drawn to a report to the effect that, in connection with Britain's application for membership of the EEC, the British Government sought to make reservations concerning the free movement of people between the Republic and the six northeastern counties and, if so, if he can state the exact nature of the reservations which the British Government sought to make in the matter, and whether the Irish Government was consulted in relation thereto.

I have seen the report referred to.

I understand that, in the course of their discussions in Brussels on the provisions of the Treaty of Rome with regard to the free movement of workers, the British delegation indicated that they might find it necessary to make a reservation arising out of the employment situation in the Six Counties, but that no specific proposals were made and no substantive discussion on the matter took place.

The Government were not consulted in the matter.
