Vol. 200 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grants to University College, Galway.

39.

andMr. Geoghegan asked the Minister for Education if his attention has been drawn to a recent statement to the effect that the future of University College, Galway, is in jeopardy because of the alleged failure of the Government to increase the estimates for grants to the College; and if he has any comment to make on the matter.

40.

andMrs. Hogan O'Higgins asked the Minister for Education if, having regard to the adverse effect on the economic life of Galway which would follow from any decline in University College, Galway, he will consider ensuring that the College will have parity with University College, Dublin in the matter of grants.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 39 and 40 together.

Whoever made the statement referred to by Deputies Carty and Geoghegan reminds me of the man who said, "My mind is made up and so please don't confuse me with facts".

The facts are that a glance at page 145 of the 1963-64 Estimates would have shown that, subject to the approval of Dáil Éireann, an increase of £23,000 is being made in the annual grant for University College, Galway, in the coming financial year.

Moreover, in proportion to the number of students the annual grant to University College, Galway, is higher than that to any of the other three Colleges.
