asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of the year 1958-59 (a) the average number of weeks of attendance, the average number of hours of attendance per week, and the total average attendance hours of a full-time vocational school pupil, (b) the average cost per attendance hour per vocational pupil, and (c) the estimated cost to the State and the local authority of a full-time vocational pupil on the basis of (a) and (b).

The following are the particulars requested, in so far as they are available:

SCHOOL YEAR 1958-59

(a) For full-time pupils of vocational schools:

(i) The duration of the course of instruction was, approximately

40 weeks

(ii) The figure of average number of attendance hours per week per student is not available, but the full-time courses varied, according to circumstances from

20 to 30 hours

(iii) The average attendance per pupil for the entire course was

730 hours

(b) The average cost per attendance hour for all vocational school pupils was

s.d.1 10

(c) The figures at (a) above relate to full-time pupils; that at (b) relates to all pupils, full-time and part-time. It is not possible to make a breakdown of costs as between full-time and part-time pupils in vocational schools, and the estimates requested in this part of the question cannot therefore be supplied.
