Vol. 200 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Birdhill (Tipperary) Garda Station.

29.

asked the Minister for Justice at what date the Garda station at Birdhill, County Tipperary was vacated and the local Gardaí transferred to Killaloe, County Clare, in view of the bad condition of the station; what action has been taken since that date with regard to the repair or rebuilding of the station at Birdhill; and what is the present position with regard to the provision of accommodation for Gardaí there.

The Garda station at Birdhill, County Tipperary was closed temporarily on 6th July, 1962 in order to give the Commissioner, Garda Síochána, an opportunity to consider, in the light of the experience gained in policing the area from adjoining stations, whether the station could be closed permanently without loss of police efficiency.

The Commissioner has informed me that the present arrangements are working so satisfactorily that the question of closing the station permanently will be considered in a few months' time. For that reason expenditure on the repair or renovation of the existing building at this stage would not be warranted.
