Vol. 201 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Crossmolina (Mayo) Housing.

42.

Mr. Browne

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the grave shortage of council houses at Crossmolina, County Mayo, owing to industrial expansion in the area; and if he will instruct Mayo County Council to take immediate steps to provide at least 25 houses for the applicants on whose behalf the local development committee have submitted applications.

As I indicated in my reply of 4th July, 1962, to a similar question put down by the Deputy, a housing authority in its assessment of needs may have regard to industrial development in its district and provide accordingly in its building programme. If Mayo County Council are satisfied that there is need for further local authority housing at Crossmolina or at any other centre, it is their function, without instruction from me, to take appropriate steps to meet such needs.
