Vol. 202 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Emergency Transport Service.

12.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power why an emergency lorry service has not been provided to Clontarf and to Coolock-Raheny, County Dublin, having regard to the large concentration of population in these areas, which are further from the city centre than other districts which have been provided with emergency services.

The numbers of Army lorries and drivers available are strictly limited and are not adequate to meet the demand on the routes already served. These routes were selected after careful investigation and are those on which traffic densities are the heaviest and the possibilities of alternative transport least favourable. New services could not be provided except by creating greater hardships on the routes already served.

In these circumstances, I regret very much that it would not be practicable to provide the additional emergency services suggested by the Deputy.

Would the Minister say if there is any possibility of augmenting the existing fleet of vehicles by bringing other vehicles into use ? The Civil Defence transport fleet has been mentioned in this connection.

The only information supplied to me is that the full resources available are employed at present and cannot be extended.
