Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University Fees.

36.

asked the Minister for Education whether his attention has been drawn to the fact that the fees of University College, Dublin are to be increased substantially in the near future; whether he has any information as to whether the other constituent colleges of the National University and the other universities will also be increasing their fees in the near future; and whether, in view of the fact that such increased fees will be a formidable additional burden to parents of students, he will take steps to prevent the necessity for such increases by increasing Government finance for the universities.

I am aware that the authorities of University College, Dublin, have announced increases in students' fees for the 1963/64 academic year, and that it is reported that fees at University College, Galway, are also to be increased. I have no information at present as to the intentions of the authorities of University College, Cork, or Trinity College, Dublin.

The current scales of fees at University College, Dublin, were introduced for the year 1957/58 and the scales current at the Cork and Galway Colleges and at Trinity College were introduced for 1958/59. I must point out that the total State provision for the four Colleges I have named has been increased from £671,640 in 1957/58 to £2,267,830 for 1963/64.
