asked the Minister for Education the total number of honours graduates with mathematics degrees who entered secondary teaching as registered teachers in the period from 31st January, 1951, to 31st July, 1961; and how many of these were still engaged in secondary teaching in the Republic in 1961-62.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of honours graduates in science who entered secondary teaching as registered teachers in the period 31st January, 1951 to 31st July, 1961, how many of these had as a major subject in their degree (a) physics and (b) chemistry.

asked the Minister for Education the total number of honours graduates in science who entered secondary teaching as registered teachers in the period from 31st January, 1951 to 31st July, 1961; and how many of these were still engaged in secondary teaching in the Republic in 1961-62.

The information sought in these questions is as follows:

(1) The total number of honours graduates with mathematics degrees who entered secondary teaching as registered teachers in the period from 31st January, 1951 to 31st July, 1961 was 12. Of these, 9 were still engaged in secondary teaching in the Republic in 1961-62.

(2) The total number of honours graduates in science who entered secondary teaching as registered teachers in the period 31st January, 1951 to 31st July, 1961 and who had (a) physics and (b) chemistry as a major subject in their degree was (a) 8 and (b) 25.

(3) The total number of honours graduates in science who entered secondary teaching as registered teachers in the period 31st January 1951 to 31st July, 1961 was 45. Of these 29 were still engaged in secondary teaching in the Republic in 1961-62.
